Biography

Race and ethnicity are central to how religious pluralism is worked out in America. How do the categories of race and religion intersect to produce concepts of a normative American identity? In this course, we examine the construct of race across various American congregational communities in order to understand debates on American identity and belonging. We also explore the idea of an American civil religion, and engage with the boundaries of inclusion and exclusion of particular religious groups within this category based upon racialized criteria.

  • I felt like every one of her choices in how to approach the course was brilliant, and she is an incredible facilitator of discussions. She was at once approachable and firm in her expectations, and I felt supported and challenged simultaneously.
