American Religion and Politics: History and Historiography Before 1865

This graduate seminar is designed for students who want to obtain a working knowledge of the interactions among religion and politics in the United States before 1865. The first objective of the course is to gain facility in the reading and interpretation of primary source materials. You will learn how to “do” history for yourselves, as you read about the experiences of religious individuals and groups in American history, and you will learn about the methods and developments of histories about religion and politics in the U.S. (historiography).
